A long lost world awakened and preserved May 22, 2008 Klaus Meyer (Berlin, Germany) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This beautiful book offers a selection of 140 photographs from the Romanovs' albums, providing a portrait of the private and public lives of Tsar Nicholas II's family.
The life and times of the last Czar is long gone and so much has changed ever since. So such a book not only awakenes this world for today's reader but preserves it for the future. It is extremely well done and beautiful to look at. Just enjoy this.
Grandson's comments September 28, 2006 Mr. David A. Hume (Bishopton,UK) 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
I enjoyed this book as the photographs come from my grandmother Alexandra's album and my Aunt Maria(Mary). There is only one page where the photographs have not been given the right attribution. Apart from this I can recomend it.
Spectacular! August 18, 2003 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
There is only one word to describe this album-breathtaking(or is that two words). It contains photos never before seen.Although this book has some text explaining each of the photos, this book really has little text as this is a coffee table photo book and the emphasis is on all of the great antique photos. This selection of 140 rare, unpublished photographs from the Romanovs' own albums is an intimate portrait of the private and public lives of Tsar Nicholas II's family. This unique compilation is taken from the personal album of the Tsar's daughter Grand Duchess Maria and from the Tsarina Alexandra's own commemorative album, both now in the James Blair Lovell Archive. It also draws on the impressive collection of Ian Lilburn, a close friend of Anna Anderson, once the most plausible claimant to being the Grand Duchess Anastasia. With an explanatory text and informative captions often compiled from the original Russian, this is an extraordinary chronicle of a way of life that ended with the brutal execution of practically every member of the Imperial Family photographed in this book. Anyone interested in antique photos of the Last Tsar’s family and close friends would absolutely love this beautiful photo book, definitely a “Must Have” item.
